starlight7 Posted January 2, 2006 Share Posted January 2, 2006 I emigrated to Australia with husband and 2 babies 32 years ago and we knew nothing about the place so although we loved it here from the start, it would have been nice to be a little less ignorant. Our biggest dilema is a nobvious one, will we be ok and get jobs, we have a relitivley comfortable life here, however we have seen Brisbane and fell in love with the place. We have 2 kids aged 7 yrs, I am 36 and hubbie 40. I think the whole school child care, work thing is the worry, just selling everything and starting over again. I work in the travel industry and Hubbie aerospace industry. Brisbane and Queensland are where a lot of Aussies go for their holidays so there should be plenty of work for you - there is a big travel and tourist industry there. Not so sure about the aerospace but there are a number of airports big and small there so I am sure there would be something. Don't worry about the schooling too much - it is very good, particularly for primary school aged children. The equipment is excellent and they are sensible about things like making all the kids wear hats when they go out in the sun. They set a great store on friendship and co-operation so I am sure your two will feel most welcome. Most classes are not too big- 25 would be about average but many are much smaller in the country areas. It is quite hot and humid in Brisbane in the Summer months but the climate is glorious in 'winter' and a lot of people from the Southern states escape up there then. One of our worries is the house prices there. When we first looked into it $375,000 could get you a pretty decent home (ie 4 bed, double garage two bathrooms ect) But recently I,v been told the house prices have doulbled in the last two years. Couple of girls 11 & 5 comfy life, late thirties wanting that little bit more than the 9-5 grind. We have to have our Meds done before the granting of a visa but can see no probs there. Fingers-crossed. We've stayed in Brisbane last year for 3 weeks with some friends who live in Albany Creek area and did the touristy bit but the most interesting part of the holiday was going around to various peoples houses for BBQ's and getting their opinion to the schools, lifestyle and laidback attitude that everyone seemed to have. Check out http://www.ourbrisbane.com.au for some good tips on the area, cost of housing and schooling there's quite a lot of info on there. But don't worry too much, the average 4 bed 2 bath house isn't $750k now. I got some average property prices yesterday, and the QLD average is now $331k, and my particular area is $420k. In my area small 3 bed houses are being advertised at betweeen $270k and $330k, on average 700sm blocks A quick look in my local paper gives: 4 bed massive house on 1036sm $489k, but very nice. 4 bed average decent house on average block $399k These are in Brisbane Bayside, (not a cheap area) to give you an idea. I forgot to mention, on that specific point: I bought a 3 bed house for $220k in April 2003, and it is now worth about $280k. I also bought a 5 bed house in Dec 2002, for $385k and it is now worth about $500k. So they haven't really doubled. Both of them have actually gone up by 9% per year average, since I bought them The property doubling time was a few years ago.
